At a few points during Jason’s Roll Call, his mom wanted to offer a rejoinder. “But . . . ,” she started to say several times.
Coach Meg reminded her that she needed to listen and not impose her views. “You have to honor these voices and their needs,” Coach Meg said, “even if you don’t always agree with what they’re telling you.”
At the end of the Roll Call, Elizabeth was given the opportunity to speak. She paused a minute as she reflected on what she had heard. “Wow,” she said. “By the time I heard Jason’s Meaning Maker, I realized how much this idea of becoming a teacher really matters to him.”
Coach Meg nodded. “Yup,” she said. “This Roll Call is almost unanimous.”
Elizabeth realized then that while she and her husband could play a role, they could not be the authors of Jason’s life. This was his journey, and at least at the present time, he seemed pretty clear about its direction. Forcing the issue would backfire.
“You couldn’t argue against his needs,” Coach Meg says. “And I think it was a very powerful experience for Jason’s mom, as well as for Jason himself, to hear those needs articulated, and articulated clearly.”
Jason continued on his track as an education major. By his senior year, he was student teaching in an inner-city school in Massachusetts, where, he told Coach Meg in an e-mail, there were possibilities of employment after graduation. “I think I can make a real difference here,” he wrote.
That, Coach Meg thought as she read the e-mail, is the voice of Confidence.
